The Perkins Pirates varsity football team will be led by Jalen Santoro, a former Tiffin University football player and assistant football coach at Bellevue High School for the past two years.

The Perkins Local School District Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Coach Santoro as the football coach during its regular meeting on Wednesday. Coach Santoro will replace Coach Jason Ziegler, who resigned in January.

Coach Santoro was hired after a month-long recruiting process.

In his recommendation of Coach Santoro to the Board, Perkins Superintendent Todd Boggs referenced the candidate’s resume objective: “The Head Football Coach’s role is to provide leadership and technical expertise in order to support and accomplish the institution’s vision for the student-athletes and the football team.”

Mr. Boggs told Board members that Coach Santoro is a proven role model, on and off the field.

“He will lead by example and represent Perkins Local Schools and our district’s family in a first-class manner,” Mr. Boggs said. “Mr. Santoro is obligated to our families, school, coaches, and teammates to lead a system that we all will be proud of.”

Coach Santoro, who attended the meeting, said he felt very welcomed during the interview process and looks forward to joining the Perkins family.

“This is a blessing to get this opportunity,” Coach Santoro said. “I’m very excited to get started … I’m really hoping to get this ship sailing in the right direction.”

Board member Ted Kastor, who was on the committee that interviewed the candidates, said the committee considered 17 candidates.

“Coach Santoro clearly separated himself from the other candidates,” Mr. Kastor said. “I’m very excited about Pirate football and I’m sure you will be too.”

The interview committee included coaches, teachers, administrators, and parents and guardians. “It was a great cross-section of the community,” Mr. Kastor said.

Coach Santoro is a 2013 graduate of Bellevue High School and played quarterback for the Bellevue Redmen football squad in its run to 2012 Division III state championship game. He also is an assistant girls basketball coach for Bellevue High School.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Tiffin University in 2016 and with a master’s degree in education in 2019.

The district will host a reception for Coach Santoro to meet his new team, students, and parents at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, in the PHS cafeteria. Everyone is welcome to attend.
