Students in three of Perkins Local School District buildings will begin required Ohio state testing this week. The tests, which assess students comprehension of math, science, social studies, and language arts, will continue over the next three weeks.

They also are required for high school graduation in Ohio.

So, parents beware: The tests, administered to students in grades 3-11, can produce some anxiety for students. Parents can help allay their children’s worries by being supportive and offering them encouragement.

Parents should ensure their children are well-rested and get a good night sleep before a test. Parents should make sure their students get up promptly and early enough so they are not in a rush to arrive at school on-time.

Also, be sure to avoid scheduling doctors or other out-of-school appointments during testing times.

Before heading off to school, students should also eat a healthy breakfast that will carry them through the tests. Try to avoid heavy foods that make students groggy and sugary foods that make them anxious or hyper.

Parents also can help their children handle test-taking stress by asking them about the tests and offering encouragement. Parents, if you’re anxious about the tests, do not pass the stress on to them: Be positive and encourage your children to relax, be confident, and do their best.

When they get home from school, follow-up with your children. Ask them how they did and offer praise for their hard work.
