Final Plan: PHS 2020 Commencement Ceremony

PHS To Host Graduation On May 29

Perkins High School will honor its Class of 2020 with a commencement ceremony that combines an online welcoming and an in-person presentation of diplomas to each graduate outside PHS. The ceremony, as previously scheduled, will be on the evening of Friday, May 29.

While the plan is not the traditional ceremony our graduates so deserve, given the pandemic, it is a safe alternative that celebrates our graduating seniors while maintaining social distancing protocols. The plan was developed with the guidance provided by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Health on April 29th. The plan also has been reviewed and approved by Mr. Pete Schade, health commissioner at the Erie County Department of Health.

The ceremony officially will begin online at 4:00 p.m., with a pre-recorded presentation posted to the PerkinsNow YouTube channel and the PHS Facebook page, and it will also be broadcast on the public access channel of BCSN. The ceremony will include a welcome and short speeches from the Perkins administration, as well as addresses from the Class of 2020 president Grace Nielsen and class speaker, Janice Buehrer.

At 5:30 p.m., we will commence the presentation of the diplomas to the senior class members with a drive-through presentation system. We will have seniors and their families enter the north parking lot in their cars and line up. We are requesting that graduates sit on the passenger side of the vehicle for exiting purposes.

To ensure a steady flow of traffic, the senior class will be divided into four sections and directed to come to Perkins High School at an assigned time. Only one car per graduate is allowed unless prior approval has been obtained. We are asking that graduates arrive during their assigned time only to avoid delays or congestion. Below are times for seniors and their families to arrive at the PHS parking lot:

  • 5:30 - 6:15  A - E students come to drive through
  • 6:15 - 7:00  F - K students come to drive through
  • 7:00 - 7:45  L - R students come to drive through
  • 7:45 - 8:30  S- Z students come to drive through

If a graduate’s relative is a Perkins Local Schools staff member that relative will be allowed to join his or her student on stage and present the diploma. Principal Harbal will step away in this situation.

Everyone on stage will be wearing masks, gloves, and maintain proper social distancing. An administrator, while wearing gloves, will hand a ceremonial diploma to the senior. The graduate then will exit the stage where a photographer will take their photograph. The graduate and their family will then be directed to exit from the Perkins High School grounds via the south parking lot.

Staff members and Perkins Police will be stationed around the Perkins High School building and parking lots to direct vehicle traffic and to ensure orderly flow.

The official diplomas will be distributed (as is PHS custom) on Tuesday, June 9, along with each graduate’s professional picture.
